The Committees report finds that the present arrangements aimed at ensuring that the outside interests of select committee chairman do not compromise their responsibilities or effectiveness in the role, are adequate. Receipt of a salary from public funds is not grounds, per se, for imposing restrictions on the outside interests of MPs and the Committee argues that there is no reason why a different principle should apply to payments to select committee chairmen. However, the Committee recommends that if select committee chairmen are to be paid from public funds, the House of Commons should endorse a set of principles that ensure no conflict of interest arises from a chairmans salary and an outside interest, including the public declaration of interests as soon as the chairman has been chosen, to be accessible via the internet.
