The revised ILO Code of Practice on Safety and Health in Forestry Work provides comprehensive guidance for improving occupational safety and health across the forestry sector. Adopted by a Meeting of Experts in Geneva in May 2024, it replaces the previous 1998 edition and reflects current understanding of workplace risks, responsibilities and protective measures.

The code establishes the general duties, rights and responsibilities of governments, employers, workers and other sectoral actors. It covers occupational safety and health management systems, incident reporting, worker competence and training, equipment safety, personal protective equipment, welfare arrangements, health hazards and wider labour protections.

Practical technical guidance is also provided for forestry worksites, with dedicated sections covering silviculture, harvesting and fire management. The revised code addresses emerging areas of risk and recognises a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work.
