The Act sets out a series of measures to conserve biodiversity and to enhance the biological and geological heritage of Scotland. It is in five parts. Part 1 introduces a new general duty on public bodies to further conservation. Part 2 makes changes to the arrangements for sites of special scientific interest. Part 3 extends the law in relation to the protection of birds, animals and plants. Part 4 requires the creation of a new code of guidance on fossils. Part 5 deals with various supplemental matters. The Act replaces most of Part II of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and makes significant amendments to Part I.
