The Act contains provisions to end the hunting of wild animals with dogs (except where it is carried out in accordance with the conditions of an exemption as specified in schedule 1); and to ban all hare coursing events.

Following the use of the 1949 Parliament Act to pass this legislation, the Act received Royal Assent on 18/11/04 and will come into force three months from this date. Representatives of the pro-hunting Countryside Alliance have subsequently launched a legal challenge to the ban on hunting with hounds by seeking a judicial review by the High Court in London.
