The Statistics and Registration Services Act creates a new body, the Statistics Board, with statutory responsibility to promote and safeguard the production and publication of official statistics. it is established at a Non-Ministerial Department, acting at arms length from ministers, composed of a majority of non-executive members, with responsibility for the whole of the UK statistical system. It is the legal successor to ONS, which will cease to exist, as will the Statistics Commission
