An "inherently safer" approach to hazard management is one that tries to eliminate hazards by careful attention to the fundamental design and layout as opposed to "add-on" engineered safety systems. This report describes a pilot study which assesses how far inherent safety is being applied in the design of offshore oil and gas installations on the UKCS.
