This Volume of the Fire Service Manual, 'Fire Protection of Buildings', replaces the previous 'Manual of Firemanship – Book 9'. It also contains new chapters dealing with the developments in technology over the period since the last publication.

The manual is divided into three sections:

• Section 1 - Fire extinguishing systems

• Section 2 - Fire warning and detection systems

• Section 3 - Smoke control and fire venting systems

This revision recognises the significant impact of European Directives (The Construction Products Directive 89/106/EEC), and includes the European technical standards being introduced to support the Essential Requirements in the directive.

This publication supersedes both 'Manual of Firemanship: A Survey of the Science of Fire-fighting – Book 9: Fire Protection of Buildings' (ISBN 0113409893) and 'Manual of Firemanship: A Survey of the Science of Fire-fighting – Book 11: Practical Firemanship 1' (ISBN 011340591X).
