This Act gives legislative effect to the St Andrews Agreement, which was reached on 13th October 2006 following negotiations between the British and Irish Governments and the Northern Ireland political parties. In particular, it contains provisions to create a 'Transitional Assembly' which will make the arrangements to facilitate the restoration of devolved government within Northern Ireland, with new Assembly elections to take place on 7th March 2007.
