This Act contains measures to improve public access to the open countryside and registered common land while recognising the legitimate interests of land owners. It amends the law relating to rights of way and the law relating to nature conservation by strengthening protection for Sites of Special Scientific Interest through tougher penalties and providing extra powers for the prosecution of wildlife crime. The Act has five Parts covering: access to the countryside; public rights of way and road traffic; nature conservation and wildlife protection; areas of outstanding natural beauty; miscellaneous and supplementary issues.
