Over 60 per cent of Northern Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions arise from the production and use of energy, with 36 per cent arising from electricity generation. The Committee's report considers a number of issues relating to five broad themes: high electricity costs; improving energy efficiency; renewable energy; gas network extensions; and the all-island energy market. Recommendations include: 1) an implementation plan should be established to meet the target of producing 35 per cent of electricity generation by renewable sources by 2020; and 2) the island should remain a nuclear free zone and the nuclear power and reprocessing plants on the west coast of Britain should be closed. The substantial government subsidies for the nuclear energy industry should be redirected to renewable energy. The minutes of evidence (ISBN 0339601159) and written submissions (ISBN 0339601167) relating to the report are also available as separate volumes.
