The Act replaces the power of indefinite detention without trial of foreign nationals suspected of involvement in terrorism (as established in the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001: available below) with a new system of control orders applicable to all individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism-related activity, irrespective of nationality or terrorist cause. Each order will be tailored to the particular risk posed by the individual concerned.
The range of obligations which may be imposed include:

Deprivation of liberty and requirements as to place of abode

Restrictions on movement to or within certain areas

Prohibiting the use of phones and the internet

Restrictions on communications and associations
