It contains 25 sections and includes provisions designed to enhance the UK's contribution to combating climate change, particularly by helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions; to assist in alleviating fuel poverty; to help establish long-term viable UK energy supplies; and to place a duty on local authorities to have regard to how they might improve energy efficiency and increase microgeneration (generation of electricity and heat by individual consumers or small groups of consumers) and the production and use of biomass and fuels derived from biomass in their area.
